Kelly-Springfield Tire Company, which had been located in Cumberland since1921, closed its doors 25 years ago. The closing was a significant event in our area, which hastened the downward spiral of this already depressed Appalachian region. Many family members who had worked for Kelly-Springfield are still in the county today. Some found other ways of making a living; some went on to become community leaders while others gave up trying to enter the workforce. The bonds formed among workers and their families of the same departments continue to be maintained through weekly coffees at Klein’s or yearly banquets. The Mountain Traditions Film Project returns to the AppIndie with the fifth in the series highlighting white water kayaking and rafting in Mountain Maryland. Featuring white water enthusiasts Charlie Walbridge, Seth Moessinger, and Nathan Forbeck, this piece by film maker Mike Snyder documents river adventures on the Savage River and the Upper Youghiogheny. Adrenaline junkies can get their fix on the region's Class V rapids. Currently, Dam releases occur every Monday and Friday, with Saturday releases starting this Saturday and running through the summer months.
