Downtown Cumberland Farmers Market – Every Thursday through October 13. The Downtown Cumberland Farmers' Market is a place where the community meets each week to buy the best locally grown fruits, vegetables, flowers, organic products, baked goods and so much more! The market sets up every Thursday from 9:30 am - 1:00 pm on Baltimore Street in Historic City Center from May to October. Baltimore Street is a brick pedestrian only promenade with shops, cafes and restaurants. Bring the whole family and find the best local farmers have to offer!

 

Technology at the Gap: Emerging Trends 2016, Friday, October 14, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM - Western Maryland IT Center of Excellence. Technology at the Gap is a one-day conference for web developers, system admins, network and security specialists, managers, and others in, or around, the IT industry. Hear from engaging and informative speakers and spend time sharing ideas as you enjoy a little bit of fall in Western Maryland. The conference includes morning presentations from three dynamic speakers, a variety of breakout sessions in the afternoon, breakfast, lunch, and an After Hours networking event directly following the conference wrap up. Technology at the Gap will be held at the Rocky Gap Casino Resort. This event is presented by The Western Maryland IT Center of Excellence. The Allegany County Animal Shelter is holding an open house and volunteer fair October 22, 11:30-4:00 in conjunction with National Shelter Month. Tina Rafferty, Executive Director, and Patty Collison, Shelter Manager, will be conducting a tour of the shelter and will talk about the exciting changes that are taking place, including a new on-site vet clinic and new outside housing for the dogs. We will also be showcasing our new outside dog play area. Come learn more about these new changes, our planned fall and winter events, and events planned for 2017! Ghost Tour, Saturday, October 22, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. A walking ghost tour of Historic Cumberland will be conducted on October 22 at 7:00PM. Tour guides in period costume will start the 90-minute tour at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Station where tickets may be purchased immediately prior to the tour. The tour includes hauntings from the French and Indian War to modern day sightings. The tour is appropriate for all ages. All proceeds are donated to local charities. Downtown Cumberland is the place to be on Saturday, October 29th for family fun. The annual Halloween Spooktacular celebration takes place from 11 AM until 1 PM in Downtown Cumberland and is filled with fun activities: trick-or-treating, arts and crafts, and even a magic show.

The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 Museum is open to the public every Friday from noon – 6 pm. On display are actual weapons and replica weapons, photographs, equipment, souvenirs, rations, uniforms and other memorabilia provided by Vietnam veterans or their families or friends. The Woman in Black - October 13 - October 30 - Cumberland Theatre. Based on a novel by Susan Hill, The Woman in Black, by Stephen Mallatrat, follows the story of Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, as he journeys to the attend the funeral of a client, Mrs. Alice Drablow. At the funeral, he sees a young woman with a wasted face, dressed all in black, standing in the churchyard. Sorting through Mrs. Drablow's papers, Arthur finds a box of letters, and ultimately discovers the dreadful secret of the Woman in Black - to his own terrible cost. The Allegany Arts Council hosts a group dance lesson and social dance for all ages. In cooperation with Patricia Golden, owner of Industrial Ballroom, the “Third Friday” dance sessions offer the opportunity to learn a new dance step and then practice it with others in the lovely wooden-floored spaces of the Saville and Schwab Galleries. There is an optional potluck—bring a dish to share if you’re up to it. Bring your own beverage of choice. Water is provided. The Lesson will rotate through swing, salsa, rumba, cha cha, Waltz, fox trot, and tango. Each session costs $10 for an individual, or $18 for a couple. The lesson begins at 7:15 pm and the Dance starts at 8:00 pm. The Saville Gallery is located at 9 N. Centre Street in Cumberland, MD. All are welcome.

 

Embassy Theatre is partnering with City Lights American Grill & Bar to offer dinner/theatre tickets to its Friday and Saturday shows on Oct 21, 22, 28 and 29. The package will include dinner/theatre for two, or for a single pass, including house salad and assorted dressings, spaghetti and house-made marinara, Caporale rolls and butter, soft drinks and choice of a hand-crafted dessert each from the following list: peanut butter pie, white chocolate creme brulee or fruit cobbler with or without ice cream. Gratuity is also included in the package. After dinner, the dinner/theatre package participants will be attending the Embassy's production of "The Artificial Jungle", beginning at 8 pm. Embassy Theatre, located at 49 Baltimore Street on the Downtown Cumberland Mall, will host "Rave - A Slightly Warped Production - Return of the Living Dead" on Halloween night, Oct 31. "The doors open at 8 pm," states DJ Victor Dion Friel," and we will feature 80s Dark Wave, Goth, Synth Pop & Techno, Dance Electronica, Post Punk Industrial, and even a few jokes and surprises, too." Sounds for the evening will include New Order, Depeche Mode, Blutengle, Ministry and Sisters of Mercy and many more.

There is a $5 cover charge, and the Embassy's Passport Cafe in the lobby will be serving popcorn, hot dogs, candies, American and European beers and mixed drinks.

Thru November 6, the Gilchrist Gallery and Museum hosts an exhibition by Merrill Smith, painter and Ovanas Berbarian, painter. The Gilchrist is located at 104 Washington Street in Cumberland. Best of the West - October 14 - November 12, The Saville Gallery,Three Dimensional Art of Western Maryland. The concept for the Best of the West show is organized by the Arts Councils of Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties. The exhibition will draw attention to the creative strength of Western Maryland artists. This collaborative effort of the Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett county arts councils will pull together a traveling exhibition featuring examples of the creative work being done in their respective counties. The focus of the first Best of the West show is three-dimensional artwork. The first venue for the show will be the Allegany Arts Council's Saville Gallery in Cumberland. The show will open October 14 and run through Nov. 12.
