Christmas at the Castle – November 30 – December 13 – 8 PM. The Holding Hands for Haley Foundation is now accepting wreath, swag, garland and wooden sign donations for The Christmas in the Castle that will be held November 30th and December 1st and 2nd. Donations can be dropped off at Progressive Physical Therapy, Cumberland and P&S Hair design, Frostburg now through November 25th. Donations also will be taken on November 28that Windsor Castle from 3 to 7. Donations can be any theme. Please help support our foundation! Elf on the Shelf  - Come celebrate Cumberland's kick-off to Christmas with Buddy the Elf, and his wife, Holly the Elf, at City Hall, on November 30, from 6pm until 7:30pm. Holly the Elf will be hosting crafts and games for children, all under the beautifully decorated and festive City Hall Rotunda. Have your kids bring their pajamas and their Santa-like appetite, because cookies, hot chocolate, and other holiday treats will be served - all provided by The Queen City Creamery, Caporale's Bakery, Cafe Mark, and M&M Bakery! At the end of the evening, gather around as Buddy the Elf will read the book, 'The Elf on the Shelf' - PLUS, Santa will pop-in to check on his good friends, Buddy and Holly, and will be available for pictures with all the children, afterwards.

Samuel Denson's Last Run – Sunday, November 6, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM - Emmanuel Episcopal ChurchA reenactment of Samuel Denson's escape from enslavement through the tunnels under Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Washington Street in Cumberland. Mr. Denson was the last person to use that part of the Underground Railroad. Refreshments will be served after the performance.


Allegany Museum is going crackers for Christmas! - Nutcrackers, that is. The largest display of nutcrackers ever shown in Maryland will open on Friday December 2nd in the grand ballroom on the 2nd floor of Allegany Museum, after the civic Tree Lighting Ceremony. The Opening Reception will open the huge exhibition, including rare historic nutcrackers in the form of woodcarvings of soldiers, knights, kings, and other professions. There will be refreshments for all attending. The Opening Reception kicks off the Nutcracker Season, which will run every Saturday from December 3 through 17. The series of three "Nutty Kids Saturdays" begins December 3 with the history of the nutcracker and "cracker craft". On December 10 there will be book readings, craft, and a visit from Santa. "Nutty music" on December 17 will complete the kids’ series. All “Nutty Saturdays” run from 10 am-12 noon, and are free. They are most suitable for children between the ages of 4 to 10. Children under 10 can collect a different nutcracker ornament at each event, from the Opening Reception through the "Nutty" Kids Saturdays to make a personal collection of four ornaments, and can enter a drawing for a special nutcracker. All events are free. ?For more information, go to our website, or call (301) 777-7200

WMSR Wine Tasting Excursion – Saturday, November 5 - Join us for a special wine tasting event on the rails featuring wines from Charis Winery. Our Evening Paradise Trains depart from Cumberland to a scenic location along the Great Allegheny Passage. Dining Class guests enjoy several small-plate meals with paired wines. Lounge Car service will also be available with appetizers paired with wines. Boarding begins at 5:30pm; train departs at 6:00pm. This three-hour excursion will return to Cumberland at 9:00pm. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 Museum is open to the public every Friday from noon – 6 pm. On display are actual weapons and replica weapons, photographs, equipment, souvenirs, rations, uniforms and other memorabilia provided by Vietnam veterans or their families or friends. A video is available for the public to watch. The museum is open each Friday, there is no admission fee and groups may tour the museum at other times by appointment by calling 301-777-7001.




The Allegany Arts Council hosts a group dance lesson and social dance for all ages. In cooperation with Patricia Golden, owner of Industrial Ballroom, the “Third Friday” dance sessions offer the opportunity to learn a new dance step and then practice it with others in the lovely wooden-floored spaces of the Saville and Schwab Galleries. There is an optional potluck—bring a dish to share if you’re up to it. Bring your own beverage of choice. Water is provided. The Lesson will rotate through swing, salsa, rumba, cha cha, Waltz, fox trot, and tango. Each session costs $10 for an individual, or $18 for a couple. The lesson begins at 7:15 pm and the Dance starts at 8:00 pm. The Saville Gallery is located at 9 N. Centre Street in Cumberland, MD. All are welcome.

Best of the West - October 14 - November 12, The Saville Gallery,Three Dimensional Art of Western Maryland. The concept for the Best of the West show is organized by the Arts Councils of Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties. The exhibition will draw attention to the creative strength of Western Maryland artists. This collaborative effort of the Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett county arts councils will pull together a traveling exhibition featuring examples of the creative work being done in their respective counties. The focus of the first Best of the West show is three-dimensional artwork. The first venue for the show will be the Allegany Arts Council's Saville Gallery in Cumberland. For this special event, we will be selling luminaria bags that will be lit and displayed on Centre Street near the Downtown Mall. For our holiday luminaria display, we have opened this to anyone who would like to remember ANY loved who has passed away for any reason, not just cancer. Each name will be written on a bag and the bags will be lit with red or green glow sticks. We want to share this very touching experience with our entire community and come together with hope at this special time of year. We will place the bags in alphabetical order by last name to make them easier to find. The bags will be sold for $10 each.
