CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University are collaborating on activities to mark International Day of Peace, a United Nations-designated effort for global unity and non-violence.

 

A number of events have been scheduled from Sept. 20-24 at each campus ranging from peace walks and discussions to poetry readings and the coloring of mandalas, the circular designs that promote healing through meditative relaxation.

 

Garrett College joins in the observance on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when a peace dialogue involving students and faculty and staff members from all three institutions of higher education is conducted on the FSU campus.

Frostburg State University will launch its fall semester with a bang – literally, with a fireworks display following the FSU Bobcats season-opening football game against Geneva College on Saturday, Sept. 3.

The Bobcats take on the Golden Tornadoes from Beaver Falls, Pa., starting at 7 p.m. and lasting until approximately 9:30 p.m. Admission to this and all Bobcat athletic events is free.

The best view of the fireworks will be from the stands of Bobcat Stadium. The fireworks, presented by the famed Zambelli Fireworks, will be launched from the area of the upper practice fields above University Drive, so they should be visible from many locations on campus and in Frostburg. CUMBERLAND, MD - Embassy Theatre, located at 49 Baltimore Street, Downtown Cumberland Mall, will host a benefit for Octavia Grimm this Saturday, August 20. The proceeds from the event will assist Octavia with her leukemia medical expenses. 

According to event chair Trish Jankey, "Octavia is such a wonderful person, and she continues with her journey, facing medical challenges along the way. This benefit will assist her and her family with the enormous medical expenses for her treatments."

The vendor show will be held from 12 noon-5:00 pm, and cost for vendors to set up is $20. Each vendor also will provide a donated item for the Chinese Auction.
