Allegany College of Maryland, Frostburg State University and Garrett College are joining forces to launch a volunteer center to serve Allegany and Garrett counties. Its goal is to recruit and manage volunteers using Internet-accessible computer software that connects with participants across a broad and largely rural geographical area.

In addition to meeting current needs, this "virtual volunteer center" seeks to lay ground work needed for expanded services in the future, including through training sessions that abet volunteers and boost their numbers.

Mountain Maryland Solar Co-op Selects Big D Electric to Serve Group PDF Print E-mail

Cumberland, MD – The Mountain Maryland Solar Co-op has selected Big D Electric to install solar panels for the 43-member group. Co-op members selected Big D Electric through a competitive bidding process over four other firms. 
 
“It is an honor to be selected because as a company, Big D Electric has provided awareness of Renewable Energy to our region since 2005,” said Betsy Delozier, owner of Big D Electric. “We are happy to show customers the benefits of going Solar.”

Authors, Publishers, Readers Uniting in Downtown Frostburg for 10th Annual Independent Literature Fe PDF Print E-mail

Whether searching for something interesting to read, the chance to rub elbows with published authors, information about the process of writing and publishing or simply a good home for stories or poems, Frostburg’s 10th annual Independent Literature Festival will have the answer. Organized by Frostburg State University’s Center for Literary Arts, the entire event is open to the public free of charge.

Publishers, editors and authors from nearly 30 boutique publishing houses and literary magazines will come together in downtown Frostburg for this year’s “Indie Lit Fest,” which begins on the evening of Friday, Oct. 14, and continues all day Saturday, Oct. 15.

Allegany County will host an Electronics Recycling Week September 26 - October 2 at multiple sites. Items accepted include computers and accessories, gaming systems, mobile devices, office equipment, data center equipment, and more. $5 tags can be purchased for television recycling. Recycling centers area located in Cumberland- Penn-Mar, Flintstone Refuse Site, Frostburg Mountain View Drop Off Area, Little Orleans Refuse Site, Lonaconing Town Hall, Oldtown Refuse Site, and Westernport Town Hall.  For more information call: 301-777-5933 ext 210.

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University are collaborating on activities to mark International Day of Peace, a United Nations-designated effort for global unity and non-violence.

 

A number of events have been scheduled from Sept. 20-24 at each campus ranging from peace walks and discussions to poetry readings and the coloring of mandalas, the circular designs that promote healing through meditative relaxation.

 

Garrett College joins in the observance on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when a peace dialogue involving students and faculty and staff members from all three institutions of higher education is conducted on the FSU campus.
