Robert LemaireRobert Lemaire, a senior and president of BURG Peer Education Network at Frostburg State University, was awarded the 2016 BACCHUS Outstanding Student Award for his involvement with BURG’s numerous influential activities on campus to promote a healthy and safe environment.

Lemaire joined the organization in fall of 2012 as a freshman and has proven to be a dedicated member since. BURG is a group of peers who believe in empowering, educating and creating change among those peers and the entire community. BURG promotes healthy choices on campus and provides recreational alternatives to drinking and drugs. Lemaire, of Tilghman, Md., is a physics major and math minor with plans to pursue a career in aerospace after graduating in December 2017.

CUMBERLAND, Md. – The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which recently evaluated Allegany College of Maryland for institutional and educational effectiveness, has reaffirmed its accreditation through 2022-23.

 The regional accrediting agency’s approval, issued at a mid-November meeting, follows a comprehensive review of the college as a whole and of individual units.

 The process included an institutional self-study and an onsite evaluation by a team of nine community college executives, administrators and faculty members.

 Middle States examines for 14 standards that demonstrate its Characteristics of Excellence in Higher Education in colleges seeking accreditation.

Allegany College of Maryland, Frostburg State University and Garrett College are joining forces to launch a volunteer center to serve Allegany and Garrett counties. Its goal is to recruit and manage volunteers using Internet-accessible computer software that connects with participants across a broad and largely rural geographical area.

In addition to meeting current needs, this "virtual volunteer center" seeks to lay ground work needed for expanded services in the future, including through training sessions that abet volunteers and boost their numbers.

Cumberland, MD – The Mountain Maryland Solar Co-op has selected Big D Electric to install solar panels for the 43-member group. Co-op members selected Big D Electric through a competitive bidding process over four other firms. 
“It is an honor to be selected because as a company, Big D Electric has provided awareness of Renewable Energy to our region since 2005,” said Betsy Delozier, owner of Big D Electric. “We are happy to show customers the benefits of going Solar.”
