Flaming Bubble1sBishop Walsh School will host its Second Annual Science Showcase on Sat., May 9, from 10 am - 1 pm at the school on Bishop Walsh Road in Cumberland.
The event, open to all area children ages PreK-12th grade, will include cool, hands-on scientific experiments involving exploding gummy bears (back by popular demand), hovercraft rides, gushing geysers, flaming bubbles, glow-in-the-dark slime, rocket launches, a robotics demo and more.

True Stories of Horses, Llamas and Cats,” and “Mr. and Mrs. Sock and the True Spirit of Christmas,”

on April 25 from 10 am to 2 pm.

Radeschi will also have available, for the first time, child-size pillows featuring full-color illustrations

Frostburg State University will host the annual Western Maryland STEM Festival on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Cordts PE Center Main Arena and the nearby University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Appalachian Lab. This event introduces regional youth to the exciting possibilities of science, technology, engineering and math fields and is free and open to K-12 students and their families.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about science topics using fun, hands-on activities, including an egg drop, boat building, stop-motion animation, bubbles, marbles, robots, make-your-own slime, a mad scientist show and a Ping-Pong ball volcano. Class of 2015 is hosting a happy hour outreach event for the nonprofit organization Resources for Independence (RFI) at Mezzo’s Restaurant and Bar in Cumberland on Tues., May 5 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Attendees will hear staff and client perspectives of their experiences with RFI and have opportunities to support the fundraising efforts of the organization, which includes an annual golf tournament, while playing golf-themed skill and raffle games that evening. All donations collected that evening will benefit RFI.

University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor William E. Kirwan has appointed Tom Bowling as interim president of Frostburg State University (FSU). The appointment is effective July 1, 2015. Bowling is currently FSU’s vice president for student affairs.


As interim president, Bowling will temporarily succeed FSU President Jonathan Gibralter who announced in February that he is leaving the university to become president of Wells College in Aurora, NY. President of FSU since August 2006, Gibralter will join Wells on July 1.
