Frostburg State University will host a meeting on the Marcellus Shale natural gas extraction, with a focus on understanding the water allocations permitting process, on Wednesday, May 26 from 10:30 AM until 1:30 PM in room 226 of the Compton Science Center.

The meeting will feature guest speaker Tom Beauduy, Deputy Director and chief counsel of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC).  This workshop will be of special interest to landowners, business people, elected officials, media, and the academic community.

Topics to be discussed at the workshop include the process and policies developed by SRBC in approaching natural gas extraction from the Marcellus Shale.  There are challenges and opportunities inherent in the exploration and development of the Marcellus Shale in our communities.  Recent research by Pennsylvania State University suggests that more than 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas may be found in the Marcellus Shale and at least 10 percent of that, with an estimated value of $1 trillion, can be recovered with advanced drilling technology.

The workshop registration fee is $20 which includes lunch.  Seating is limited.  The workshop is co-sponsored by the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, and The Greater Cumberland Committee.
