Groucho Marx certainly got it right with that quote! Especially when it comes to nutrition and health and all the different diets, supplements, and unusual approaches to healing our bodies. We need to always challenge our assumptions and be willing to examine new perspectives, yet base our decisions on good science coupled with common sense.
Not an easy task when we have instant access to so much information and ideas via the Internet!
But let me share with you a perspective I feel is worthy of an open mind. I learned about this at the June 2009 Food as Medicine training sponsored by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC. The approach is called “functional medicine” and ... |

Life can be humbling.
This summer one of my elderly neighbors paused to chat as I worked in my garden. "Well, honey", she said shaking her head, "You sure must be discouraged!" My look of confusion prompted her to continue. "All that bending and planting I have watched you do since spring and what do you have for it? A giant weed patch!"

Our food system fills us up, but leaves us empty!
(Reprinted from the October 2009 Health Journal, Cumberland Times- News.)
This is the second in a series* of articles on food and nutrition.
“WARNING: This hamburger may be hazardous to your health. Why the American food system is bad for our bodies, the economy, and our environment…..”. This chilling statement from the August 31 cover of TIME magazine is flashing through my brain as I head home from the college, contemplating my next article for the Health Journal.
But I’m hungry and it’s been a long day at work. Ten hours to be exact.
As a card-carrying flexitarian, I have the right – maybe even the obligation - to occasionally stop for fast food on my way home.

The BURG Peer Education Network of Frostburg State University was honored at the National BACCHUS General Assembly in Orlando, Fla. receiving two national awards for Outstanding Creativity in Peer Education Recruitment and Public Relation Strategies.
FSU student Mark Freeman was elected as the National Student Trustee, the highest student honor in Peer Education. The student trustee oversees the 12 regional student advisory council members and serves on the BACCHUS Peer Education Network Board of Trustees.
