Allegany County residents Christina Crites, Sharon Ellsworth, Ray Hunt, Angel Schultz, Jason Pannone and others are among the dozen or so runners and walkers pre-registered for the free Run for Gold 26.2K and relay run/walk this Sunday, August 12 on the Great Allegheny Passage.
Locally, the event services as a chance for runners and walkers to catch the Olympic spirit this weekend along the Great Allegheny Passage by participating in the 26.2-kilometer run and relay.
The event, a participant's choice of either a competition or a training run, begins near the Meyersdale trailhead and goes point-to-point along the Great Allegheny Passage. The route will end atop the switchbacks at the Frostburg (Md.) Depot.
Participation is free, although donations have been accepted by the sponsoring Potomac Highlands Distance Club to offset costs of water, Gatorade and other items for the Run for Gold.
The 26.2-kilometer distance (16.28 miles) is a symbolic show of support for the 26.2-mile Men's Olympic Marathon, which is scheduled for the same day in London. Relay partners will each run approximately one-half that distance. The exchange zone is at the height of the Great Allegheny Passage at the Eastern Continental Divide.
