A male feline neuter clinic sponsored by the Allegany County Animal Shelter Management Foundation is being held Saturday, May 14. The Foundation has sponsored the semi-annual event for the past several years.
“We have been overwhelmed by the success of our neuter clinics,” commented foundation vice-president, Becky McClarran. “Our goal is two-fold – we have too many male cats roaming loose and overpopulation is a serious problem which seems to be escalating. By sponsoring clinics such as this, we hope to help control the overpopulation. We also hope to increase awareness that feline sterilization is an action all responsible cat owners should take.”

Former LaVale resident, Allan Grubb is bicycling 600 miles to help special needs children gain adapted playground equipment and bicycles.
Already one hundred miles into his trek, Allan spoke of his goal to raise money for Battle Monument School, a Baltimore facility for children with special needs so playground and bicycling equipment could be purchased and/or updated. Allan worked at the school and formed an attachment to the school and the students. "It's been a great job. These kids do amazing and inspiring things. They face a lot of challenges, but they need those challenges."

Allegany College of Maryland’s Volunteer Center and its Peace Studies and Volunteer clubs are participants in Paper Cranes for Japan, an international fundraiser to benefit victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Students Rebuild, an organization that mobilizes young people for action on global issues, has partnered with the Bezos Family Foundation to donate as much as $200,000 to disaster relief in Japan.
The effort involves students making a crane by origami, the traditional Japanese art of folding paper. For each paper crane made the foundation, begun by creators of Amazon, the worldwide e-retailer, will donate $2 to Architecture for Humanity, which is working to help rebuild the affected area of Japan.

On Thursday, April 7, as part of Frostburg State University’s “Enough is Enough” campaign, FSU student organization Breaking Through GLASS (Bisexuals, Transgenders, Gays, Lesbians, and Straight Supporters) will show a work-in-progress film they are making as part of the It Gets Better project.
The film will debut at 7:00 p.m. in the South Addition of the Lane University Center on FSU’s campus.
The “It Gets Better” project began in September 2010 in response to media coverage of several teen suicides that occurred due to bullying related to the victim’s sexual orientation.
