Professor Lynn Bowman is debuting her brand new book, "Everyone Counts. A history of African American enslavement in Allegany County, Maryland” at the Gordon-Roberts House, 218 Washington Street on Saturday, Feb. 24, 1 pm. This book takes a deep dive into Allegany County’s antebellum newspapers, land records and personal correspondence to explore the slavery we didn’t learn about in high school, slavery on the National Road. The author lets forgotten figures speak their truth.  See and handle copies of original letters, photographs and more. Light refreshment provided. An associate professor of English and Speech at Allegany College of Maryland, Lynn Bowman also serves her community as a member of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture. V-Day Cumberland 2018February 8, 7-9 pm. The Cumberland Theatre and The Allegany Arts Council present a benefit reading of The Vagina Monologues and selections from A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer. Join us as we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this groundbreaking play and the founding of V-Day, the Global Activist Movement to End Violence Against Women and Girls. On Thursday, February 8th and Friday, February 9th, 2018, at 7pm, V-Day Cumberland will present a two-night benefit reading of Eve Ensler’s award winning play. The show will feature a cast of community members, local actors and guest artists from surrounding areas. 90% of profits will benefit the Family Crisis Resource Center in Cumberland. Tickets are $10 and will be available online beginning January 20th and at the door 30 minutes prior to each performance. V-Day Cumberland is a local effort within the worldwide context of the 20th Anniversary V-Day Campaign. Valentine Poetry Reading – February 13, 6:30-8:30 pm. Join the Allegany Arts Council and the FSU Center for Literary Arts for a Valentine Poetry Reading on Tuesday, February 13th in the Schwab Mountain Maryland Gallery. Mardi Gras at the Embassy – February 24 - Doors open at 6 pm and performers start at 7 pm. Mardi Gras at the Embassy will feature games and live music. The Allegany Arts Council hosts a monthly group dance lesson and social dance for all ages. In cooperation with Patricia Golden, owner of Industrial Ballroom, the "Third Friday" dance sessionsoffer the opportunity to learn a new dance step and then practice it with others in the lovely wooden-floored spaces of the Saville and Schwab Galleries. There is an optional potluck - bring a dish to share if you're up to it. Bring your own beverage of choice. Water is provided. The Lesson will rotate through swing, salsa, rumba, cha cha, Waltz, fox trot, and tango. Each session costs $10 for an individual, or $18 for a couple. The lesson begins at 7:15pm and the Dance starts at 8pm. The Saville Gallery is located at 9 N. Centre Street in Cumberland, MD. All are welcome.

 

Open Mic Monthly – January 14. Embassy Theatre on the historic downtown Cumberland Mall, welcomes all to the Jan 14th REPRISE: Open Mic Monthly. Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition Call for Entries

Now Open! Classes Being Offered!  Our region's premiere photography competition is now open for online entries through callforentry.org. The 2018 juror is Karen Irvine, Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. Check out this interview with Irvine here. Over $5000 in prizes is being offered. The deadline for submissions is February 20, 2018.

Photography Class Series: To encourage local participation, the Photography Committee of the Allegany Arts Council is offering a series of photography classes in January. Whether you are just starting or have been shooting for years, this “don’t miss” series of workshops presented by professional photographers is designed to take you to the next level in your photography.   • A Taste of Touchstone: Artistry in Appalachia – February 3 -17. The Allegany Arts Council has teamed up with Pennsylvania's Touchstone Center for Crafts for an eclectic exhibition of artwork from artists who have studied at the residential art school. Displayed artwork includes ceramic, metal, glass and sculpture, among other mediums. Located roughly an hour southeast of Pittsburgh, Touchstone is Pennsylvania's only residential craft school. A public reception is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10 from 6-8pm. This event is open to the public and refreshments will be served. Author, speaker and consultant, her articles have appeared in the yearly Journal of the Grants Professionals Association and Nonprofit World. The workshop will be jam-packed with information about how to identify and design projects, grant searches, tools for grant writers, writing the grant application and grant administration.
